Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and CBD

In recent years more research has taken place on what properties CBD have and what conditions and diseases it may help people with. Studies have shown that CBD has potential to help multiple diseases such as, dementia, seizures, depression and cancer.

Recent research into CBD suggests it can help IBD including Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis.

What is Inflammatory Bowel Disease IBD?

IBD - inflammatory bowel disease - is a chronic life-long condition of the gastrointestinal tract. With this condition various parts of the digestive system including the bowel can become swollen, ulcerated and inflamed. Not everyone experiences constant symptoms, people may go through periods of good health and then have relapses or flare ups.

IBD can refer to either Crohn's Disease or Ulcerative Colitis.

Currently IBD, Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis affects more than 300,000 people in the UK.

Is there a cure for IBD?

While there is no cure for these diseases people are using anti-inflammatory drugs to help ease the symptoms. Drug treatments include steroids, 5ASAs, and biological drugs like infliximab and adalimumab.

Yet, like most drugs they aren’t without their side effects. People may experience:

  • Stomach pain
  • Heart burn
  • Stomach ulcers
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness and allergic reactions

With these side effects in mind it’s easy to see why people turn towards natural food supplements like CBD to relieve their pain and symptoms. Many studies carried out on CBD find it has anti-inflammatory qualities - this helps with people who have IBD, Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. Due to its non-psychoactive qualities, CBD is very safe to take and people won’t experience the ‘high’ most people associate with cannabis.

Research into IBD and CBD

One study which took place in 2017 at the department of physiology and pharmacology in Italy. Researchers saw 13 people who suffered from IBD and Crohn’s disease. They set out to see if taking CBD would improve their morbidity and diminished life quality. As a result, they took CBD for 3 months. After the 3 months was over, all 13 patients reported improvement in general health, social functioning and ability to work.

‘Three months' treatment with inhaled cannabis improves quality of life measurements, disease activity index, and causes weight gain and rise in BMI in long-standing IBD patients.’
